Life insurance in plain English

Life insurance pays a tax-free benefit to the people you name when you pass away. They can use it for anything — a funeral, remaining medical bills, a mortgage, credit cards, or simply income while they get back on their feet.

Final expense coverage

A smaller whole life policy, often between $5,000 and $35,000, designed to cover funeral costs, burial or cremation and final bills. Premiums stay level, the coverage doesn't expire, and many plans require only simple health questions — no medical exam.

Term life

Coverage for a set number of years — commonly 10, 20 or 30 — at the lowest cost per dollar of protection. It's a strong fit while you still have a mortgage, a business loan or dependents at home. When the term ends, the coverage ends.

Whole life

Permanent coverage with a level premium that doesn't increase with age, plus cash value that grows over time and can be borrowed against. It costs more per dollar of coverage than term but never expires as long as premiums are paid.

Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

A permanent policy that builds cash value credited based on a market index, like the S&P 500. In years the index rises your cash value can grow; in down years a 0% floor typically helps protect it. Premiums are flexible, and the death benefit lasts a lifetime as long as the policy stays in force.

An IUL is not a substitute for retirement investments, and it's not right for everyone. See our full Indexed Universal Life (IUL) guide →

There is no single right answer. We compare offers from multiple carriers, explain the trade-offs honestly, and let you decide without pressure.

  • A spouse depends on your Social Security or pension income
  • You'd like to leave money to grandchildren or a favorite cause
  • You were declined before and think you can't qualify
  • You have an old policy and want to know whether it still makes sense
