Quick answer

Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care. Part B helps cover medical and outpatient services. Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is a private-plan alternative for receiving Part A and Part B benefits. Part D helps cover prescription drugs. Nu Life Healthcare helps you understand how these pieces can fit together.

What does Medicare Part A cover?

Part A is hospital insurance. It helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care under qualifying conditions, hospice care, and certain home health services. Most people do not pay a monthly Part A premium because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Part A is not completely free. In 2026, the inpatient hospital deductible is $1,736 per benefit period, and daily coinsurance can apply during longer stays.

What does Medicare Part B cover?

Part B is medical insurance. It helps cover doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, durable medical equipment, diagnostic testing, and other medically necessary services. The standard Part B premium is $202.90 per month in 2026, although some people pay more based on income. The 2026 Part B deductible is $283.

What is Medicare Part C?

Part C is Medicare Advantage. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They provide Part A and Part B benefits and usually include Part D drug coverage. Many plans offer additional benefits, but networks, referrals, prior authorization, copayments, and benefit limits vary.

What does Medicare Part D cover?

Part D helps cover outpatient prescription drugs. You can receive Part D through a stand-alone drug plan with Original Medicare or through a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage. Formularies, pharmacy networks, premiums, deductibles, and copayments vary by plan.

Where does Medigap fit?

Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap, can help pay certain out-of-pocket costs when you have Original Medicare. Medigap is not used with Medicare Advantage. Timing matters because federal Medigap enrollment protections are strongest during your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period.

Nebraska Medicare review checklist

  • Original Medicare generally means Part A plus Part B.
  • Part D can be added to Original Medicare for prescription coverage.
  • Medigap may supplement Original Medicare but cannot be paired with Medicare Advantage.
  • Medicare Advantage bundles Part A, Part B, and usually Part D through a private plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need every part of Medicare?
Not necessarily in the same form. Your needs, other coverage, prescriptions, and preferred way of receiving benefits determine which pieces apply.
Is Medicare Advantage the same as a Medicare Supplement?
No. Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits, while Medigap supplements Original Medicare.
Does Original Medicare include prescription coverage?
Original Medicare does not generally include outpatient prescription coverage, so many beneficiaries add a separate Part D plan.
Can Nu Life compare Medicare choices in my area?
Yes. Nu Life Healthcare can review available options based on your ZIP code, providers, medications, and priorities.
