Medicare Supplement Insurance: What to Know About Medigap

Quick answer

Medigap is private supplemental insurance for people with Original Medicare. It may help pay eligible deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Your federal six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins the first month you have Medicare Part B and are age 65 or older. After that window, medical underwriting may apply unless you have a protected right.

What does Medigap do?

Medigap works alongside Original Medicare. Medicare pays its approved share first, and the Medigap policy may pay some or all of the remaining eligible amount, depending on the standardized plan letter you choose.

Medigap policies do not generally include outpatient prescription drug coverage, so beneficiaries often need a separate Part D plan. Medigap also cannot be used to pay Medicare Advantage copayments or deductibles.

Why is the six-month enrollment window important?

Federal law gives you a one-time six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period beginning when you are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this period, an insurer cannot deny an available Medigap policy or charge more because of pre-existing health problems.

After the window ends, insurers may use medical underwriting in many situations. You could face higher prices, fewer available choices, or a denial unless you qualify for a guaranteed-issue protection. This Medigap window is different from the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period.

Are Medigap benefits standardized?

In most states, policies are standardized by letter. The core benefits of a particular letter are the same regardless of the company selling it, but premiums, household discounts, rate history, customer service, and pricing methods can differ. A few states standardize Medigap differently, so confirm what is available where you live.

What should you compare?

Compare the plan letter, current premium, expected rate increases, company history, discounts, and whether you also need Part D. Nu Life Healthcare can explain how Medigap differs from Medicare Advantage so you can choose a coverage path before comparing individual products.
